Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

In 1946, when CMHC was created, the most pressing issue was the lack of housing in Canada. During the depression, much of our housing fell into disrepair because of a lack of funds. As troops returned from World War II ready to settle down, raise families and get back to work, there was literally almost nowhere for them to go. CMHC, along with Canada's construction industry, began to build homes in neighbourhoods that still stand today, a style of house connected to Canada's post-war growth.
