The University, along with its two affiliated schools -- the École
Polytechnique, itself the biggest engineering school in Canada, and the École des Hautes
Études Commerciales -- is home to the Founded in 1876 as the intellectual rallying point and professional training for Montreal's French language community, it was first created as a Montreal branch of l'Université Laval of Quebec City and subsequently, in 1920, it became an independent institution. In 1943 the University moved to its current campus on top of Mont Royal. As Montreal's only French-language university for almost a century,
it has been entrusted with teaching and research responsibilities in most fields of
knowledge. The diversity of the University's commitments in every sector --human sciences,
Governing its development and directing the choices it will face in the decades to come is the University's commitment to the future. Rooted in more than a century of tradition, the Université of Montréal, already ranked among the finest research universities in Canada, is now also rapidly advancing to its goal of becoming a major North American university as well as its leading French-language university. |
